Experience

My repertoire involves working with children in various settings. For the past three summers, I have worked at a summer camp. In 2011, I worked as a camp counselor and a teacher in sports and small craft at Camp Nicolet. I was in charge of leading lessons in different sports, such as soccer and volleyball. I was also in charge of leading lessons in canoeing, kayaking, and wind surfing/sailing. On top of this, I was also a cabin counselor, where I lived with 10 girls for an entire summer. For the summers of 2012 and 2013, I worked at, YMCA Camp Icaghowan. I was a cabin counselor for both summers. I also taught activities in the areas of sports, target sports, swimming, nature, and other various activities. My other duties included helping organize all camp games and special days. This summer, my main duties involved leading activities and guiding trips for youth ages 7-17. I was given the opportunity to work with the oldest campers this summer. My duties involved developing programming and leading the campers in a week long canoeing trip. I also worked with Camp Avanti for one week. Camp Avanti is a camp dedicated to children on the autism spectrum. I was able to collaborate with professional therapists to lead campers with autism. These experiences have helped diversify me and have helped me learn more about working with children. From 2010-2012, I was a tutor through Upward Bound at NMU. For this job, I tutored high school students in all subjects who were in the program. Unfortunatley, the program lost its funding and had to be shut down. I have done some private tutoring sessions for high school students since. My certifications include CPR for children and adult, AED, First Aid, and Wilderness First Aid. I also have obtained a substitute teaching license for the state of Michigan as of the beginning of 2013. I have substituted a few times since then as a rover.

Hobbies

Some of my hobbies include: hiking, reading, scrapbooking, yoga/zumba, canoeing/kayaking, playing sports, and doing teacher things.  I am also a huge Green Bay Packer fan, so I enjoy watching the Packers play! My major is Elementary Education with minors in Language Arts and Integrated Sciences. My dream job would be to teach out west (someplace like Colorado). I want to teach first grade through third grade. I also would love to travel someday and teach children from non-English speaking countries. Part of my career goal is to write a children’s book. Some of my artistic strengths include writing and collaging. I really enjoy writing, and I believe that I am great with words. I would like to write a children’s book someday. I also really enjoy scrapbooking, so I believe that I am good at making collages and putting together different pieces of art. One concern I have for today’s current education system is the lack of funding necessary to give all students an excellent education. This is one of the reasons why I am so passionate about teaching. I would like to help change the current state of education. I don’t know how yet, but I know that I would like to be involved. I also became a teacher because I want to inspire students to learn and discover the world around them. I also believe that all children deserve an education. All they really need from schools is caring teachers who believe in them and want them to succeed. I spend a lot of my time volunteering here at Northern. I am apart of Superior Edge and am looking to complete my edges by graduation.
