I am currently a graduate student at Northern Michigan University. I am working towards my M.S. in experimental psychology. I completed my B.A. in psychology from Western Washington University.
Experience
Before moving to Michigan I was a tutor for an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). If you are not familiar with the program it is designed to help students get ready for college behaviorally, and cognitively. You can find out more information about the program at WWW.avid.org. What I enjoyed about the experience was being a supportive figure in students lives who did not have someone at home pushing them to achieve. Many of the students I worked with were the first in their family to apply to college, as was I. I enjoyed being a resource to students. I also enjoyed seeing what I learned in my undergraduate degree in psychology. A portion of my studies as a psychology student was spent on developmental psychology from socialization to cognitive development. Another experience that I would like to highlight that applies to this position is my role as a soccer coach. I have years of experience finding new ways to explain things to make sure three is a clear understanding. I also similar to tutoring, from being a soccer coach I have a keen sense for when kids are agreeing because they want to please, or not indicating that that they don't really understand. Lastly, I know how to keep kids engaged and interested.
